Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR)
This device mounts in a cruiser and is connected to the onboard laptop computer. As the officer is driving on the roadway, the ALPR constantly reads vehicle license plates in the area without any input from the officer. These license plate numbers are automatically compared to a database containing known stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and other persons of interest. When a targeted plate is recognized, the officer is alerted for further investigation. The ALPR is capable of running thousands of license plates within the officer’s eight hour shift—an impossible task without the aid of this device. Devices like the LoJack and ALPR cannot replace an officer, but they help make each officer on the street extremely efficient.
