Enhance the quality of life, economic development and improve the health of area citizens. Continue to be an inter-generational location for children, families, adults, and older adults to recreate and create memories. A part of the community identity and quality of life.

For more than 16 years, the 96,000 sq. ft. Westerville Community Center has provided a destination for fitness, community and fun for many thousands of residents and visitors. And with more than 2,500 programs each year, it has truly become the center of the Westerville community.

The facility has become so popular that the community recognized the need for more space and additional amenities. With voter renewal of the Parks and Recreation Open Space Master Plan (PROS) in 2014, Westerville approved funding for an updated community center.

Expanding such a large, multi-use facility is no simple task. The planning and execution required to reach the final product is an extensive process, and key phases have to be completed.

During Phase 1, public input was critical. The Westerville Parks and Recreation Department collected community input through surveys, open houses and charrettes. A detailed analysis of the Westerville Community Center was necessary to build a foundation for future plans. An in-depth look at the facility's current conditions and programming was conducted.

Phase 2 brought design and construction development to the forefront. After the designs and construction documents were created, the next step was to go out to bid to find the right group to bring the physical project to life. Westerville City Council recently approved a bid this fall.

The project has now moved into Phase 3. This portion of the expansion begins with construction and ends with the public - you! - enjoying the NEW Westerville Community Center.

To kick off this final phase, the City officially broke ground on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Westerville Community Center.

Construction is now underway and is anticipated to wrap in early 2020. The end result will be a state-of-the-art facility that is better equipped to serve the Westerville Community Center, with expanded fitness and gym space, a warm water therapy pool, integration of the Older Adult Center and much more.

The PROS (Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces) Master Plan supports the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department in the forecasting and development of initiatives and priorities that include well-balanced parks, facilities and programs.

Discussions and community engagement on the need to expand the Westerville Community Center facility emerged during the PROS Master Planning process. The needs included:

  • Provision of additional amenities
  • Consolidation of Senior Center and Community Center facilities
  • Expansion of Community Center facility square footage
  • Additional programming for resident and visitors of all ages
