Fire Chief Brian C. Miller has announced his retirement from the Westerville Division of Fire, effective April 2, 2026. Miller started his career at WFD in 2000 as a firefighter/paramedic and was promoted to Chief Fire Marshal in 2012. He has served the last 11 years serving as Chief.
Throughout his tenure, Chief Miller oversaw significant growth and expansion of fire and EMS services for the communities of Westerville and Blendon Township. He also managed the City and Township’s response to COVID-19, including the administration of emergency procedures during the Delta variant that strained local and regional medical resources.
"It has been my honor and privilege to see our fire department continue to expand services and grow, always keeping everyone's safety in mind," Miller stated in his retirement letter. He also extended his heartfelt thanks to the community and his colleagues for their support throughout his life and career.
"Chief Miller has been a pillar of safety and leadership in Westerville for over two decades, particularly in emergency management," said City Manager Monica Dupee. "His dedication to the 'highest level of commitment' is evident in the professional, life-saving organization he leaves behind. We are grateful for his steady hand and wish him a well-deserved retirement."
Chief Miller is working closely with City leadership to transition responsibilities. The City will begin an immediate recruitment process to identify a visionary leader to continue WFD’s tradition of excellence in fire protection and prevention service and emergency medical response.
