The City continues to develop the 88 acres east of Africa Road, which is located next to the City's successful Westar business district.

Best Practices

The City is required by the Environmental Protection Agency to have a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for the East of Africa project. The SWPPP is a living document that is updated throughout the life of the project as conditions inevitably change. The goal of the SWPPP is to minimize the amount of sediment and debris from leaving the construction site by the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs). BMPs include items such as erosion control fence, check dams, dandy bags, construction entrances and others. Once vegetation (grass or other) has established to 70% or greater of the area, these temporary BMPs can be removed. 

Throughout the life of a project, the SWPPP and BMPs are updated to meet the ever-changing conditions. These controls are regularly inspected, cleaned and modified following permitting requirements. East of Africa is a bustling construction site, and as the site has grown, the City has expanded the controls above and beyond the SWPPP.
