Welcome, Deputy Fire Chiefs

The Westerville Division of Fire (WFD) welcomes its new members of the leadership team this week. Deputy Chiefs Mindy Gabriel and George Sorge took their oaths of service at the Westerville City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 3.

Deputy Chief Gabriel comes to Westerville from the Upper Arlington Division of Fire. She has an extensive background in community emergency medical services (EMS) and working with firefighters as a peer counselor. Chief Gabriel is a leader who is passionate about delivering the highest quality service to the community she serves and the people with whom she works. She has a proven track record of developing innovative programs for the evolving fire-based EMS. She also has a collaborative spirit that brings people and community partners together to solve complex problems. A 17-year veteran of the fire service, she resides in Columbus with her husband and three children.

Deputy Chief Sorge will take on the role of Deputy Chief of Fire and Rescue Operations. He previously served the Norwich Township Fire Department as lieutenant, where he fostered a team environment encouraging open communication with firefighter/paramedics assigned to stations. A state of Ohio Fire Instructor, Chief Sorge prioritizes training and education. He has led department-wide training in areas of high-rise firefighting, firefighter self-rescue and multi-rescue company drills. He routinely develops lesson plans and training topics for his shift and department, and frequently assists neighboring fire departments as an assistant instructor on various topics. Deputy Chief Sorge has more than 23 years of experience in the fire service. He lives in Pickerington with his wife and three children.
