Fireworks Safety

Post Date:07/02/2020 1:00 AM

The Westerville Divisions of Fire and Police wish residents a safe and happy Independence Day. Each year on the Fourth of July, thousands of people, most often children or teens, are seriously injured while using fireworks. Additionally, the hot conditions that accompany the summer months spark concern for increased risk of fires on dry ground or vegetation. If you choose to use fireworks this year, the safety tips below from the National Safety Council can help prevent injuries.

As always, be sure to review the City code regarding fireworks displays and activity in Westerville before purchasing or using fireworks.

  • Only novelty fireworks (e.g., sparklers, "smoke bombs") are legal in the state of Ohio. All other fireworks should be left to the professionals.
  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Always have water handy (a hose or bucket).
  • Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
  • Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
  • Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
  • Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.
