Improving Electric Reliability in Westerville
The Westerville Electric Division (WED) electric grid updates are making the City’s goal of fewer electric outages a reality. Infrastructure updates began in 2004 on Westerville’s northwest side as several underground distribution systems and several key overhead feeders were replaced and upgraded.
For nearly a decade now, WED has budgeted for and successfully completed annual underground cable replacement projects involving more than 45 miles of primary cable. Less reliable, unjacketed cable designed and installed during the 1960’s and 1970’s is being replaced with new and improved jacketed cable installed in conduit for added protection and extended life.
In addition, we are consistently replacing and improving our street lighting systems and equipment. Over the past decade we have installed more than 900 new residential street lights on over 20 miles of street light circuitry.
Most of the system improvements were necessary due to infrastructure reaching the end of its useful life, which is approximately 25 years. As a result of the proactive approach to replace equipment and system components before failure, we are able to reduce both the number of outages and the duration of those beyond our control.

Additional system improvements scheduled to occur this year are:
• Underground cable replacement in Spring Creek, Autumn Woods, Shadow Wood Farms and Springborough subdivisions.
• Street light improvements in Olde Mill and Spring Hollow subdivisions.
• New overhead distribution and lighting systems in Westerville Heights.
• Overhead to underground conversion and street light improvement for the south state street streetscape project.
