Advanced meters are now available to businesses and other commercial entities in the City so that they have expanded options to monitor and control their usage of electricity and water. Residents may choose to participate in a voluntary basis if they are in range to do so.
Advanced Meters
Advanced meters allow for the measuring of electricity and water usage on a daily, hourly, or on-demand basis. Meter measurement data can be sent to the utility company in near real-time enabling the customer to see this information, which may also include the current price being charged. Meters currently being used at business sites throughout Westerville are not automated, and much like the odometer on an automobile, simply tally the amount of electricity or water being used. They must also be manually read at the business every month by a meter reader for the purpose of determining monthly consumption charges.
Advanced metering provides:
- Automated meter reading,
- Automated outage reporting,
- Utility usage information for consumer use.
These features are expected to save utility customers money on their use of electricity and water. Further, businesses in Westerville have expressed the desire to automate their building energy management processes using advanced metering technology, thereby keeping pace with national and global competitors using similar technology.
Commercial and Industrial Customers
Westerville City Council has limited advanced metering implementation only to commercial and industrial entities in Westerville, with the option for residents to participate on a voluntary basis if they are within range to do so.
Residential Customers
There will be no change to the meters in or on homes in Westerville. In addition, there will be no change in rates to the Westerville customer as a result of implementing the commercial/industrial advanced metering program.
Residents who wish to have access to an advanced meter and are within a certain range of where meters have been deployed for a business or businesses may participate in the program on a voluntary basis. For more information or to indicate your interest in participating, please call the Westerville Electric Division at (614) 901-6700.
