The Westerville Communications Division makes use of the Dialogic Communications Corporation tool known as the “Communicator”. The system is a stand alone computer that enables the division to make mass phone calls at one time to telephones (Landline or Cellular), pagers and eventually email.
When utilized for low priority incidents the in-house computer phone lines are used to make phone calls and you will see the number 614-901-6790 on your caller ID. When utilized for high priority incidents, the in-house computer is used to establish a call list which is then sent to Tennessee, where the City's Communicator vendor is located. The Communicator then makes the phone calls using the vendor's large bank of phone lines, as opposed to the City's internal phone lines, which makes the calls in a faster timeframe. When calls originate from the vendor, Dialogic Communications Corporation, your caller ID may show an area code of 615 because it is originating from Tennessee. So whether your caller ID shows an area code of 615 or a phone number of 614-901-6790, it is important that you answer because it could be the City of Westerville calling with information about your neighborhood or a Police and/or Fire related incident.
The computer was used in the past year for various reasons such as missing person notifications, hazardous material incidents, calling in Fire personnel for overtime, and a few Police related incidents just to name a few.
Safe Call is another program that is offered through the use of the Communicator. Daily phone calls are made to the homebound, elderly or other persons in need of daily care to check on their well-being. If assistance is needed, Police, Fire or EMS units are sent to help. Utmost discretion is used with the system and names and phone numbers are not given out to anyone outside the City of Westerville.
