Select parks throughout Westerville have lightning prediction systems including Alum Creek Park North, Alum Creek South Park, Heritage Park , Heritage Park Phase II, Highlands Park, Hoff Woods Park, Huber Village Park, Metzger Park, Sports Complex, Towers Park and Walnut Ridge Park.

Lightning Prediction Systems are active from April 16 - October 31.

These lightning systems give park patrons 8 to 20 minutes of advance notice of the possibility of lightning in the area. A sensor monitors the potential for lightning strikes within a 2-1/2 mile radius (5 mile diameter). The previously mentioned parks are each equipped with air horns that will sound when a signal is transmitted from the lightning prediction sensor. When there is the possibility of lightning within the radius of the sensor, one continuous horn burst from the air horn will be sounded warning park patrons to stop all organized activities and take shelter. When the threat has passed, the all-clear horn which emits a series of 3 short horn bursts will be sounded and play may resume.

For more information about the lightning prediction system, call Doug Vineyard, Parks and Facilities Maintenance Superintendent at (614) 901-6514.
