The Westerville Division of Fire is now taking applications for their 2008 Citizen’s Fire Academy, the first of its kind to Central Ohio.  The Academy, which begins  August 6th is an extension of the Division’s community education efforts.  Its main purpose is to increase citizen awareness of day-to-day operations of the Division by educating them on topics relative to the role of firefighters and fire safety in our community.

“Fighting fires is probably the first thing that people think of when asked about a Fire Division., but the great majority of our runs are not fires,” said Chief Bernie Ingles.  “We answer more than 3,800 calls annually for emergency medical service, and we are very active in the schools and community with our fire prevention efforts.  This program will help people better understand all that is involved in being a firefighter and paramedic.”

Topics of instruction will include Protective Equipment, Fire Chemistry and Behavior, Search & Rescue, EMS, CPR, Public Fire Safety Education, Fire Extinguishers, and many other subjects pertaining to the Fire Division.  The Academy is open free of charge to anyone who lives in Westerville or Blendon Township.  The first night of class will be August 6, 2008, and classes will continue one night a week for ten weeks.  To obtain an application, please call 614.901.6641.  The application deadline is July 16, 2008.
