 Parks/Facilities

The Parks Division manages over 559 acres of park land in 46 locations and maintains neighborhood, community and school parks; nature preserves; sports complexes; greenways; and all city grounds. Facilities also include managed wetlands, mini parks, baseball/softball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, an amphitheater, fitness station, playgrounds, shelters, restrooms and over 25 miles of bikeways and leisure paths.

The Urban Forestry staff, with the guidance of the Shade Tree Commission, maintains over 12,000 street trees plus all public trees to ensure their maximum performance for the community. In addition, the Parks Division maintains public gardens, flowerbeds, flower pots, hanging baskets and 65 acres of medians and city right-of-ways. There are a variety of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals planted throughout Westerville and staff is always interested in volunteer efforts throughout the season to help maintain maximum curb appeal. To volunteer with the Parks Maintenance Division, call Margie Fugate, Horticulturist at (614) 901-6588.

Under the direction of Jody Stowers, Parks and Recreation Director and Doug Vineyard, Parks and Facilities Maintenance Superintendent, the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department has developed park maintenance standards that assist in guiding the maintenance for city parks to ensure a safe and positive experience for all park users.

 Lightning Prediction System
Select parks throughout Westerville have lightning prediction systems including Alum Creek Park North, Alum Creek South Park, Heritage Park, Heritage Park Phase II, Highlands Park, Hoff Woods Park, Huber Village Park, Metzger Park , Sports Complex, Towers Park and Walnut Ridge Park. These lightning systems give park patrons 8 to 20 minutes of advance notice of the possibility of lightning in the area.  A sensor monitors the potential for lightning strikes within a 2-1/2 mile radius (5 mile diameter). The previously mentioned parks are each equipped with air horns that will sound when a signal is transmitted from the lightning prediction sensor.  When there is the possibility of lightning within the radius of the sensor, one continuous horn burst from the air horn will be sounded warning park patrons to stop all organized activities and take shelter.  When the threat has passed, the all-clear horn which emits a series of 3 short horn bursts will be sounded and play may resume.
