The Westerville Division of Police mission is to serve the public with the highest possible standard of service and to maintain a safe environment for all who live, work, or play in Westerville. This mission is accomplished through pro-active and reactive services that utilize patrol, investigations and community services.
The philosophy of the Westerville Police Division is one of total resource policing, and its top priority is crime prevention. The Police Division consists of 75 sworn officers, 20 civilian employees and 20 reserve officers. Civilian volunteers; including Chaplain Corps and WCPAAA, contribute hundreds of hours per year helping our officers.
Westerville's community policing efforts fall into both traditional and contemporary categories, including: bicycle and foot patrols; commercial vehicle enforcement; selective traffic problem-area enforcement, and use of the speed monitor sign throughout the City. See below for a brief description of these programs. For more details, call (614) 901-6450.
Bicycle Patrol - Officers patrol on bicycle, weather permitting, reaching out to citizens and improving our overall crime detection efforts.
Commercial Enforcement - Officers monitor commercial vehicle enforcement on the City's busy arterioles, such as State Rt. 3.
Foot Patrol - In the business area, the foot patrol officer enforces the law, in particular, parking regulation, and has strengthened the Division's ties to the Uptown District.
Selective Enforcement - This takes place when citizens observe and report traffic problem areas. The Division then monitors the location for approximately 30 days.
Speed Monitor Sign - The speed monitor sign is designed to make motorists aware of their speed and the legal speed in the area. The sign is moved to a variety of locations throughout the City on roadways with steady traffic volumes.
Grants also enabled the division to buy various technology, including laser radars, and to pay for a portion of the salaries of our two D.A.R.E. officers.
The Westerville Police Division is continuing its technology efforts by utilizing mobile computers in all of it's cruisers. These computers are linked to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS). Technology allows officers to receive instant information while out in the field, thereby reducing demands on our dispatchers and increasing our overall enforcement efficiencies.
Alarm Permits are required of all Westerville residents and businesses who install security alarms. Applications are available at the Police Division. There is no charge for residential alarms and a one time non-refundable fee of $25.00 for businesses. For a copy of the application and accompanying regulations, please call (614) 901-6482.
