Celebrate Westerville’s culminating event will take place during Labor Day Weekend, on Sesqui Sunday, August 31, 2008...nearly 150 years to the day that Westerville was first incorporated back in September 1858.
History will come alive throughout the Sunday events with Civil War cannon firings, trolley tours, and historic presentations. The Sertoma car show will bring historic automobiles to the grounds of Heritage Park. The Westerville Quilt Guild will sponsor a quilt show in the Everal barn and will have on display the 150th celebration quilt that they created.
Entertainment and activities for all ages will take place throughout the day at Alum Creek Park. Located on Main Street just a few blocks west of Uptown, the park will play host to a community picnic, music acts, and activities and crafts for youth. By reserving a table you will have a seat at the party for the entire day. From the Kiwanis pancake breakfast (9am-11am) to the community picnic (noon -2pm) to the greatly anticipated “Taste of Westerville” (5pm-8pm) this is a day packed with food, fun, family and friends.
Reservation forms for reserved tables and seats at the community picnic are available online by clicking HERE.
Astronaut’s Grove Park, across Main Street from Alum Creek Park, will be the site of an ice cream social (2pm-4pm) with participation by some of your favorite ice cream shops and special story times for youth and pioneer activities provided by the Westerville Public Library. Historic vehicles will be on display including a covered wagon, stagecoach, ambulance and fire wagon. The Westerville Post Office will be presenting a special stamp cancellation in honor of the occasion.
The day will conclude with a concert by the Westerville Symphony Orchestra, a dedication of the 2008 time capsule and a brief fireworks display fired off from the grounds of the water plant with best viewing at Heritage Park.
Parking is available at the lots on the Otterbein College campus, the COTA lot, and the parking lots along Collegeview Ave. There will be handicapped parking at the Westerville Senior Center and a small trolley to transport from that location to Alum Creek Park.
